AEO: Be the direct answer to the question
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is preparing your content so that direct-answer surfaces pick it: featured snippets, related-question boxes, voice assistants and AI summaries. (In Türkiye the acronym also names a customs certificate; that is a different subject.)
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of making sure the direct answer to a question comes from your page. The core rules: ask the question plainly in the heading, answer it briefly in the first paragraph, support the detail with tables and lists, and back the answer with evidence.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization aims for one outcome: when someone asks a question, the search engine or assistant takes the answer from your page. That answer can be a featured snippet, a spoken reply or a sentence inside an AI summary.
In Türkiye, searches for “AEO” also surface the Authorized Economic Operator status, a customs certificate for trading companies. We separate the two meanings in the first paragraph of our Turkish pages, which tells both readers and search engines which AEO the page is about.
How do AEO, SEO and GEO differ?
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank high in the results | Be the direct answer | Be mentioned and cited in AI answers |
| Typical surface | Search results list | Featured snippet, related questions, voice reply | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| Content shape | A page that covers the topic | Question heading with a clear first-paragraph answer | Quotable, evidenced, dated content |
| Measurement | Rankings and clicks | Impressions and selection for target queries | Mentions, citations, accuracy |
All three share one foundation. The AI side is covered on the GEO page and the foundation on the SEO page.
How does Google pick a featured snippet?
Automatically. Google’s systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a query; there is no markup that nominates a pageSource 1: Featured snippets and your website. To opt out there are the nosnippet and max-snippet controls, and Google notes that a low max-snippet value does not guarantee removal; nosnippet doesSource 1: Featured snippets and your website.
So AEO is a writing job, not a tagging job: a heading that asks the question plainly, a short answer that stands on its own, then the detail.
Do FAQ and voice-assistant markups still help?
Google limited FAQ (FAQPage) rich results to well-known government and health sites in 2023, and since 7 May 2026 the feature is no longer shown in Google Search at allSource 2: Removing documentation for the FAQ rich result feature (Search Central updates). FAQPage remains a valid schema.org type and does no harm on a page, but it no longer earns an extra appearance on Google.
The speakable markup for voice assistants is still in beta and works only in the US, for English-language Google Home devices and English-language news publishersSource 3: Speakable (BETA) structured data.
Google says there is no need to break content into tiny pieces or to write differently just for generative AI featuresSource 4: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search. The short-answer block on our pages is a summary for readers, not artificial chunking.

Frequently asked questions
01Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
Close, but not the same. AEO aims to be the direct answer and grew out of featured snippets and voice search. GEO aims to be mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers. A well-written answer page serves both.
02Should we remove FAQ markup from our site?
No need. Google no longer shows FAQ rich results, but FAQPage is a valid schema.org type and does no harmSource 2: Removing documentation for the FAQ rich result feature (Search Central updates). Just do not expect an extra appearance on Google from it.
03How do we stay out of featured snippets?
The nosnippet rule or the data-nosnippet attribute stops text from being used as a snippet. Limiting length with max-snippet is not a guaranteed opt-outSource 1: Featured snippets and your website.
04How will we see results?
Search Console query data, dated captures of target questions and a monthly report. For appearances in AI summaries we also use Search Console’s generative AI reportSource 5: Generative AI performance report (Search).
