SEO: Still the foundation of everything in the AI era

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of getting your site found, understood and shown as a trustworthy result on Google and other search engines. Google says its generative AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systemsSource 1: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, which makes SEO the ground GEO stands on.

Short answer

SEO works in three layers: technical, content and reputation. The technical layer gets pages crawled, indexed correctly and loading fast; the content layer answers the questions people actually ask; the reputation layer earns natural mentions elsewhere. Google’s AI features rely on the same foundation.

What does an SEO agency do?

Google’s own framework has three parts: the technical requirements a page needs to appear in Search, the spam policies that can lower rankings or remove a site, and the key best practices that improve how a site appearsSource 2: Google Search Essentials. An SEO agency’s job is to check and fix your site across all three, continuously.

LayerWhat we doConcrete output
TechnicalCrawling, indexing, rendering, speed, multilingual setup, redirectsA prioritised technical task list, implemented
ContentQuestion map, page plan, updates to existing pagesOne strong answer page per question
ReputationEditorial mentions, directory and industry listingsEarned, lasting links and mentions
LocalGoogle Business Profile, map listings, review processesConsistent details in maps and local results

The maps side is covered on the Local GEO page.

What do we check in technical SEO?

First we make sure Google can see the page: are links crawlable, is the important content in the initial HTML, are the right pages indexed? Then we measure speed. By the Core Web Vitals thresholds, the largest content should render within 2.5 seconds (LCP), interactions should respond within 200 milliseconds (INP) and layout shift should stay below 0.1 (CLS)Source 4: Web Vitals. INP replaced FID in March 2024Source 5: Interaction to Next Paint becomes a Core Web Vital on March 12.

  • Crawling and indexing: robots.txt, sitemaps, canonical URLs, duplicates
  • Rendering: server-side output for JavaScript-dependent content
  • Structure: internal links, breadcrumbs, hreflang on multilingual sites
  • Speed: Core Web Vitals, image and font optimisation

What does “written for people” mean?

Google suggests looking at who created the content, how it was made and why: is the author clear, how was it produced, is the main purpose to help readersSource 3: Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content? We put an author, a last-updated date and a source list on every page; the pages on this site are the example.

We work from a question map rather than a keyword list: the words your customers use go into the heading and first paragraph, and each question gets one strong answer pageSource 2: Google Search Essentials.

How do you keep rankings through a redesign?

Every URL that changes gets a permanent (301 or 308) server-side redirect to its new address. The old-to-new mapping is prepared before the move, and redirects are kept for at least a yearSource 7: Site moves with URL changes. Internal links are updated and the new sitemap is submitted in Search ConsoleSource 7: Site moves with URL changes.

What should you check when choosing an SEO agency?

  • An agency that guarantees rankings is promising something it does not control.
  • Search Console, Analytics and domain accounts should be in your name; the agency should only be a user.
  • Ask directly whether they buy links. If yes, the risk sits on your site.
  • Monthly reports should list the work done and the measurement method, not just charts.
  • Ask how they measure your visibility in AI answers.

Frequently asked questions

01How long does SEO take to show results?

It depends on where the site stands, the competition and the scope of work, so we do not give a fixed timeline. Technical fixes usually show before content and reputation work. We report monthly against the same measures.

02Should we buy SEO and GEO separately?

No. GEO is built on SEO, and Google’s AI features rely on the same ranking systemsSource 1: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search. Kaynaq runs both with one method.

03What drives SEO pricing?

Site size, technical debt, content needs, competition and number of languages. Details: SEO pricing.

04Is AI-written content a problem on Google?

Google looks at whether content helps people and recommends being transparent about how it was producedSource 3: Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content. Mass-producing low-value pages to manipulate rankings falls under its spam policiesSource 6: Spam policies for Google web search.
