GEO: When AI writes the answer, make it cite you

Your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity about your industry. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting your brand named in those answers and your site shown as a source.

Short answer

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of raising the odds that a brand is mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers. It covers keeping the site open to AI crawlers, writing quotable content, making the brand consistently recognisable across the web, and measuring the result every month with a fixed set of questions.

What is GEO?

The term spread with the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, published in 2023 and presented at KDD 2024Source 1: GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). In its experiments, citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics raised visibility in generative engine answers by 30–40%, while keyword stuffing, a familiar SEO tactic, offered little to no improvementSource 1: GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).

Classic SEO aims to move your page up the results. GEO aims to get into the answer itself: does the model read your page, name you, and link to you as a source?

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEOGEO
GoalRank high in search resultsBe mentioned and cited in AI answers
Success metricRankings, clicks, organic trafficMentions, citations, accuracy of what is said
Unit of workKeywordA question in the customer’s own words
FoundationTechnical SEO, content, linksAll of SEO + quotable content + entity consistency + third-party sources

They are not rivals. Google’s own documentation says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that SEO fundamentals remain worthwhileSource 2: AI features and your website. So GEO is built on top of SEO, not instead of it.

What does Kaynaq do in a GEO engagement?

  1. Question

We map the questions buyers in your market ask and turn them into a fixed question set, with engines and languages agreed up front.

  2. Source

We set up crawler access, text readable without JavaScript, structured data, an llms.txt file and short-answer blocks.

  3. Citation

We work to get you mentioned accurately in the third-party sources models rely on: directories, industry lists, news, communities. We never buy links.

  4. Measurement

We ask the same questions every month on the same engines and report mentions, citations and accuracy with dates.

We set up llms.txt for the tools that read it. Google says you do not need llms.txt or special markup for AI features in SearchSource 6: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, so we do not present it as a ranking lever.

Step details and the measurement protocol are on the Kaynaq Method page.

Which AI crawlers should be able to reach your site?

Companies run separate crawlers for search/answers and for model training. According to OpenAI, sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, while GPTBot is used for trainingSource 3: Overview of OpenAI crawlers. At Anthropic, Claude-SearchBot serves search, ClaudeBot training and Claude-User user requestsSource 4: Does Anthropic crawl data from the web, and how can site owners block the crawler?. Perplexity’s PerplexityBot surfaces sites in search results and is not used to train foundation modelsSource 5: Perplexity crawlers.

What we do not promise

  • No guaranteed placement for a given question on a given engine; answers vary by model, user and time.
  • No paid links, fake reviews or forum manipulation.
  • No fictional case studies or inflated numbers; we share measurements monthly, dated, with the same method.

Frequently asked questions

01Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. A large share of AI answers still draws on web pages, and Google states that SEO fundamentals remain worthwhile for AI Overviews and AI ModeSource 2: AI features and your website. GEO adds quotable content, entity consistency and regular measurement on top of that foundation.

02When will we see results?

It depends on where your site stands today, how competitive your market is and how often models crawl. That is why we do not give a fixed timeline. We take a baseline in month one, then ask the same questions every month and show the change with dates.

03Which engines do you measure?

Depending on scope: ChatGPT, Gemini (including AI Overviews and AI Mode), Perplexity, Copilot and Claude; wider scopes add Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI.

04How is GEO priced?

The number of tracked questions and engines, monthly content volume, languages and the regulatory load of your industry set the price. We send a written proposal after an intro call.
