What is GEO? A guide to being cited in AI answers
When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity about your industry, they get a written answer rather than a list of results. GEO is the work of getting your name into that answer accurately and your site cited as a source. This guide explains the logic and the first steps.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of raising the odds that a brand is mentioned accurately and cited as a source in AI answers. The term spread with an academic paper published in 2023. GEO does not replace SEO; it is built on it: a crawlable site, content that answers questions directly with sources, consistent brand facts and regular measurement.
What exactly is GEO?
The term spread with the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, published in 2023 and presented at KDD 2024Source 1: GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). Classic SEO aims for a high position in a list of results. GEO looks at the written answer that replaces the list: is your brand named, is your site cited, is what is said about you correct?
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Result | A ranked list of links | A written answer compiled from several sources |
| Goal | A high position | Being mentioned and cited in the answer |
| Measurement | Position, clicks, impressions | Mentions, citations, accuracy |
How is an AI answer formed?
For current questions, engines search the web and write an answer by combining what they find. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics to answer one question, which it calls “query fan-out”Source 2: AI features and your website. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to surface sites in ChatGPT searchSource 4: Overview of OpenAI crawlers, Anthropic uses Claude-SearchBot for search qualitySource 5: Does Anthropic crawl data from the web, and how can site owners block the crawler? and Perplexity uses PerplexityBotSource 6: Perplexity crawlers.
None of the engines explains source selection in detail. So GEO rests on two things: bots being able to reach and read your site, and your content giving the clearest, most trustworthy answer to the question.
What are we aiming for: mentions, citations, accuracy
- Mention: your brand named in the answer text.
- Citation: your site or page listed among the answer’s sources.
- Accuracy: what the answer says about you is true. Being mentioned with wrong information can be worse than not being mentioned.
Where do you start? Seven steps
Map the question set
List and freeze the questions your buyers ask. For a draft, use the question set generator.
Check bot access
Make sure search and answer bots are not blocked in robots.txt: AI bot access test.
Make text visible to bots
Major AI crawlers do not run JavaScriptSource 9: The rise of the AI crawler (Dec 2024); key content must be in the page’s initial HTML.
Write one answer page per question
Answer briefly and directly at the top, support claims with sources and add a date. In the GEO paper’s experiments, citing sources and adding quotations and statistics raised visibility by 30–40%Source 1: GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).
Make brand facts consistent
Name, address, services and official profiles should match everywhere: structured data and entity guide.
Appear in third-party sources
Get mentioned accurately in directories, associations, news and communities: digital PR guide.
Measure the same questions every month
Ask the same set on the same engines and record results with dates: measurement guide.
Common misconceptions about GEO
- “You need llms.txt.” Google says you do not need llms.txt or special markup for AI features in SearchSource 3: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search.
- “You need separate content for AI.” Google says there is no need to break content into chunks or write differently just for AISource 3: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search.
- “More keywords help.” In the GEO paper’s experiments, keyword stuffing offered little to no improvementSource 1: GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).
- “AI Overviews need special optimisation.” According to Google there are no additional requirements; a page that is indexed and snippet-eligible qualifiesSource 2: AI features and your website.
- “An agency can guarantee a spot.” Engines decide their answers; nobody can guarantee a place for a given question.
Where can you see results?

- The AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows your citations and citation share in Microsoft Copilot and BingSource 7: New AI Visibility Insights in Bing Webmaster Tools (16 Jun 2026).
- For other engines, as long as they share no data, regular question-set measurement is the only way.
Frequently asked questions
01Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in its AI features, and pages that are indexed and snippet-eligible qualifySource 2: AI features and your website. GEO is built on that foundation.
02When do GEO results show?
Technical fixes can show quickly; content and citation work shows over several measurement cycles. No exact date can be given, which is why measuring the same way every month matters.
03Can a small business do GEO?
Yes. Most of the seven steps above can be done with free tools. If you are a local business, the local GEO guide is a good next step.
